Super Robot Taisen Compact 3 (J)
Super Robot Taisen Compact 3 (J) Overview
You command squads of mecha from different anime series across grid-based battlefields, moving units and picking your attacks each turn. The objective is to defeat all enemy units or meet a scenario-specific win condition while protecting your own. Between battles, you can upgrade your robots, equip new parts, and manage your pilot roster. Dialog and story sequences advance the plot between missions, though this version leans toward simpler presentation than its console cousins. The turn order, attack ranges, and special moves play out much like other SRW titles, but with a smaller screen and fewer simultaneous units.
For a portable SRW experience of its time, Compact 3 is a solid entry that doesn't compromise the series' strategic depth too much. It's not the flashiest game visually - monochrome sprites and minimal animations - but the tactical gameplay holds up well. Fans of the genre who enjoy classic mecha anime crossovers will appreciate having this in their retro library. If you've played other WonderSwan SRWs, this one stands as one of the later, more refined Compact releases. It's a niche title, but a rewarding one for those who seek out obscure handheld strategy games.
How to Play Super Robot Taisen Compact 3 (J) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up Super Robot Taisen Compact 3, you'll see a title screen in Japanese. Press Start (Enter) to advance. The game will ask you to start a new game or load a save. New game begins the story. From there, you'll be dropped into the first battlefield map. Your units are placed on one side, enemies on the other. The goal is to wipe out the opposing force or fulfill a specific objective.
The core loop works like this: select a unit, move it within its range, then choose an action - attack, wait, or use a special ability if available. After you move all your units, the enemy takes its turn. Pay attention to the terrain and positioning, because they affect your accuracy and defense. Between missions, you can access the intermission screen to upgrade mecha, swap pilots, and save your progress. Menus are all in Japanese, but the layout is standard for SRW games: the first option is usually to proceed, and the second is to save. Experiment with each screen to learn the flow.
Manage your energy (EN) and ammunition wisely during battles. Some powerful attacks consume lots of EN, leaving you vulnerable if you overuse them. Pilots gain experience and level up, which boosts their stats. If a unit's HP reaches zero, the pilot may retreat or die depending on story flags, so try not to lose your important characters. Use the D-Pad to navigate menus and maps, and remember that pressing B (S) backs out of most menus if you mis-select.
