This is Super Robot Taisen Compact 2 - Dai Nibu - Uchuu Gekishin Hen, the second chapter in a trilogy of tactical strategy games for the WonderSwan. Released exclusively in Japan during the handheld's late-90s to early-2000s lifespan, it's a typical entry in the long-running Super Robot Taisen series. The title translates to "Space Shock Chapter" and continues the blend of original mecha and licensed anime robots that the franchise is known for. Banpresto, the series' longtime publisher, handled this WonderSwan outing, though specific developer credits are not widely confirmed. The core gameplay revolves around grid-based tactical battles. You select units from your roster, each representing a piloted mecha or ship, then move them across terrain to engage enemy forces. Battles play out with animated attack sequences, and you manage energy, ammo, and pilot skills between turns. Outside combat, there are brief story interludes and upgrade menus where you can equip parts or improve stats. The game uses a classic rock-paper-scissors element type system, encouraging you to position units advantageously. Since this is a Japanese-only release, all menus and dialogue are in Japanese, so a translation guide or familiarity with series conventions helps. For fans of tactical RPGs, especially the Super Robot Taisen family, this title offers a portable experience that's rare to find emulated. It's not a massive production like later console entries, but it captures the series' formula well on a small screen. The Compact 2 trilogy is unique to the WonderSwan, making it a niche curiosity rather than a must-play. If you enjoy grid-based strategy and don't mind language barriers, it's worth a look for the novelty alone. Otherwise, it's a competent but unremarkable addition to the genre's handheld history.

How to play Super Robot Taisen Compact 2 - Dai Nibu - Uchuu Gekishin Hen online

To get started, load the ROM and youll be greeted by the title screen. Press Start to advance. The main menu is entirely in Japanese, so look for options like the first one (New Game) or second (Continue). Commonly, the top option begins a new file. Once in the game, you'll watch brief story scenes before being placed on a field map. Use the D-Pad to move a cursor and confirm actions with the A button (X key). The B button (S key) cancels or backs out. The core loop is simple: on your turn, select a unit, move it to an adjacent tile, then choose an attack or wait. You can also use items or special commands. The objective is usually to defeat all enemies or protect a specific unit. Pay attention to the terrain icons; forests and buildings provide defense bonuses. After each battle, you might earn money to upgrade units between missions. Save often using the save option in the field menu (look for a kanji character that resembles a floppy disk). Because the game is in Japanese, navigating menus can be tricky. Many menuing patterns are similar across the series: in battle, options like "Attack" or "Spirit" appear as vertical lists. Learning the kanji for common terms like "移動" (move) and "攻撃" (attack) helps. If you get stuck, consult an online guide or translation FAQ. Start on a lower difficulty if offered, as later missions can be punishing. Remember that units that run out of energy can't attack, so manage resources wisely.
