Morita Shogi (J) [M] is a shogi (Japanese chess) title for the Bandai WonderSwan. This particular version carries an [M] tag, indicating it is a modified or hacked release - likely a translation patch or a rom hack of the original WonderSwan Morita Shogi game. The original Morita Shogi series is most known from the Nintendo 64 release Morita Shogi 64, which came out only in Japan in 1998. This WonderSwan port or adaptation maintains the same core ruleset but adapts the experience for the handheld's smaller screen and lower resolution. The player takes on either the sente (black) or gote (white) side in a game of medieval Japanese chess. The goal is to capture the opponent's king by strategically moving pieces across a 9x9 board. Shogi features a unique 'drop' rule - captured pieces can be placed back onto the board as your own, adding a layer of tactical depth. The game offers standard shogi play against a CPU opponent, with basic menu options such as choosing difficulty or setting handicaps. Since the menus are entirely in Japanese, some trial and error may be needed to navigate them. Today, Morita Shogi on WonderSwan is a niche curiosity more than a must-play title. For collectors of Japanese handheld games or shogi enthusiasts, it provides a perfectly functional way to play on the go. The [M] variant might offer improvements like an English translation or bug fixes, making it more accessible to non-Japanese speakers. Compared to its N64 counterpart, this version is simpler visually but retains the same deep strategy. If you enjoy traditional board games on retro hardware, it's worth a look, but don't expect any frills beyond the solid core game.

How to play Morita Shogi online

Getting Started Load the game in your emulator and press Start (Enter) to skip any intro screens. The main menu will appear entirely in Japanese. Typically, the first option is to start a new game, and you can use the D-Pad (Arrow Keys) to navigate and A button (X) to confirm. You may need to select your side and optionally set a handicap. The game will then lead you straight into a shogi match against the CPU. The core loop is straightforward: select a piece using the D-Pad and press A to pick it up, then move it to a valid square and press A again to drop it. Captured pieces will be held by the computer; to drop them back onto the board, move the cursor to an empty square and press a specific button (likely the B or Y button). The game does not include tutorials, so familiarity with shogi rules is assumed. If you lose or win, you can start another game from the menu. Since the menus are Japanese-only, a printed shogi rulesheet or a quick online reference might help. Practice matches are the best way to understand the interface. The game does not have a time limit, so take your time learning the controls and piece movements.

Morita Shogi FAQ

Who developed Morita Shogi?

The developer of this specific WonderSwan version is not widely documented. The original Morita Shogi 64 for Nintendo 64 was developed by Yuki Enterprise, but that does not necessarily carry over to the handheld port. It is safest to assume the developer is either a small Japanese studio or that the game is an unofficial adaptation.

Is Morita Shogi exclusive to WonderSwan or did it appear on other systems?

Morita Shogi has appeared on several platforms. Most notably, a version titled Morita Shogi 64 was released for the Nintendo 64 in Japan in 1998. There may also be releases on other Japanese systems, but the WonderSwan version is a distinct handheld entry that shares the same fundamental shogi gameplay.

What type of game is Morita Shogi?

It is a virtual board game that simulates shogi, often called Japanese chess. The game focuses on turn-based strategy where two players move pieces across a 9x9 grid with the objective of capturing the opponent's king. Shogi differs from Western chess by allowing captured pieces to be dropped back onto the board.
