Taito Chase H.Q. (USA)
About Taito Chase H.Q. (USA)
Taito Chase H.Q. landed on the NEC TurboGrafx-16 as a home conversion of the popular 1988 arcade racing game. Published by Taito, this USA release brought the high-speed police chase action to NEC's 16-bit console in the early 1990s. It's a straight port of the arcade original, keeping the same core premise and level structure.
The player takes the role of a police officer driving an undercover sports car. Each stage tasks you with chasing down a fleeing criminal vehicle across a winding highway. You must catch up to the target and repeatedly ram it until its health depletes, all while avoiding civilian traffic and staying within a strict time limit. A radar screen shows the distance to the target, and a turbo boost gives you a temporary speed advantage.
While not as deep or polished as some later TG16 racers, Chase H.Q. captures the brief, intense rush of its arcade parent. Its straightforward gameplay and memorable soundtrack have earned it a loyal following among retro enthusiasts. If you enjoy no-frills arcade racing with a clear objective, this title is worth a few laps.
How to Play Taito Chase H.Q. (USA) Online
When you start Chase H.Q., you'll see a title screen followed by a brief stage intro showing the criminal car and the time limit. Press Start to begin. Your car is in the right lane. Press the Accelerator (S button) to move forward. Use Arrow Keys to steer and switch lanes. Your goal is to chase down the red target car ahead.
The core loop is simple: catch up to the criminal and repeatedly bump into them. Each collision reduces their health bar. Watch out for traffic - hitting civilian cars slows you down and wastes precious seconds. The turbo boost (activate with X button) gives a speed burst but consumes fuel. You can refill by collecting icons on the road.
The game is pure arcade action with no save states. Each of the five stages increases in difficulty. If you fail to arrest the criminal within the time limit, it's game over. Practice memorizing traffic patterns and using turbo wisely. That's about it - a straightforward, satisfying chase.
