Inside Bomberman '93

Bomberman '93 for the NEC TurboGrafx-16 is a North American release of the classic Bomberman series, which came out in 1993. It is an official release and not a hack, mod, or prototype. The game was published during the height of the TurboGrafx-16's lifespan when multiplayer arcade-style games were popular. Details about the specific developer remain unclear, but the Bomberman franchise is traditionally associated with Hudson Soft, the original creators of the series. Players control Bomberman as he navigates maze-like levels filled with destructible blocks and enemies. The core gameplay revolves around strategically placing bombs to clear paths, defeat foes, and avoid being caught in explosions. The game supports up to five players simultaneously, making it a party favorite for its competitive and chaotic multiplayer battles. Power-ups scattered throughout the stages enhance bomb range, speed, and other abilities, encouraging tactical decision-making. On the TurboGrafx-16, Bomberman '93 stands out as one of the few multiplayer-focused titles, showcasing smooth controls and colorful visuals typical of the platform. While it may not have the extensive modes found in later Bomberman games on other systems, it remains a solid representation of the series. Its multiplayer feature especially makes it worth trying today for fans of classic arcade-style party games on retro hardware.
