About Super Volleyball

Super Volleyball on the NEC TurboGrafx-16 is a straightforward port of an arcade sports classic that also landed on the Sega Genesis. Released early in the console's life, it's a no-frills volleyball simulation designed for quick pick-up-and-play sessions. The TurboGrafx-16 version keeps the same side-view perspective and simple controls as its arcade parent, making it a natural fit for the system's sports library. Matches play out in a standard two-on-two format on a beach-like court. You control one player at a time, moving left and right to position yourself under the ball. Pressing the action button lets you serve, set, or spike, while timing your jump is key for blocking opponent attacks. The game keeps score rally-style, meaning every serve earns a point. There is no story mode or career progression, just a series of matches against the computer or a friend. For a TurboGrafx-16 sports collection, this is a solid if unspectacular entry. It doesn't offer much depth beyond basic volleyball mechanics, but that simplicity can be a strength when you want a few quick rounds. The arcade origins give it a responsive feel, and the two-player mode makes it a decent choice for local competition. If you already own a more complex sports title like World Sports Competition, Super Volleyball might feel too barebones, but as a genre exercise, it delivers exactly what the name promises.

How to play Super Volleyball online

To start playing Super Volleyball, first press Enter to get past the title screen. You'll be taken to a menu where you can choose between singles play against the computer or a two-player versus match. Use Arrow Keys to highlight your selection and press X to confirm. If you choose single-player, you'll then pick your team and start the first match.

The core loop is simple: serve the ball, rally with your opponent, and try to spike it down onto their side of the court. Use Arrow Keys to move your player left or right beneath the ball's shadow. Press X to jump or spike when the ball is near, and hold S while jumping to perform a powerful spike. Blocking is automatic if you time your jump in front of the opponent's attack. The first team to 15 points with a two-point lead wins the set.

New players should focus on positioning rather than button mashing. Watch the ball's trajectory and move your player early. If you are serving, press X to toss the ball, then press X again as it falls to hit it over the net. In doubles mode, the computer controls your partner, so you only need to worry about the player you control. The game has no tutorial or practice mode, so expect to learn by trial and error.
