Getting to Know Dragon Egg!

Dragon Egg! is a platformer for the NEC TurboGrafx-16 that originally came out only in Japan. No one seems to know exactly who developed or published it, but it belongs to the late 80s or early 90s batch of HuCard titles. It's a proper commercial release, not a hack or homebrew. The player controls a small girl who carries an egg in her backpack. That egg can transform into a dragon, which changes how you approach obstacles and enemies. The core loop is standard 2D platforming: jump between platforms, avoid hazards, and defeat enemies. The dragon form presumably adds attack options or allows you to reach higher areas, but the exact details aren't widely documented. What makes Dragon Egg! worth checking out today is that unusual gimmick of a growing dragon companion. It's a niche title, even among TurboGrafx-16 fans, so it feels like discovering a lost gem. If you enjoy quirky early platformers with a hint of fantasy, this one has a charm that's hard to find elsewhere.

How to play Dragon Egg! online

When you start the game, you'll see a Japanese title screen. Press Start (Enter) to begin. You control a small girl who moves left and right with the D-Pad and jumps with X. The egg on her back is your companion; it can transform into a dragon, but the exact trigger isn't clear from the documentation I've seen. Try pressing different buttons (S, Z, A) to see if they make the egg hatch or attack. The core gameplay involves navigating platforms, avoiding enemies, and presumably using the dragon to fight back.

Since menus are in Japanese, you may need to experiment. If you get a game over, you'll likely see a continue option - pressing Start might work. The game is a straightforward side-scroller, so keep moving right and learn enemy patterns. The dragon transformation is key, so figure out how to activate it early on.
