Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the Nintendo 64 was released in 1996 during a period when the platform was still relatively new and developers were exploring how to adapt popular arcade and console franchises to its hardware. The game was published by Midway Games, the original creators of the Mortal Kombat series. Like many N64 titles of the era, the development faced challenges related to cartridge storage limits and adapting digitized sprites and animations to the 3D-capable console, which was primarily designed for polygonal graphics.

The gameplay aimed to compile characters, moves, and fatalities from the first three Mortal Kombat games into a single package, offering a comprehensive fighting experience. Players could select from a large roster and engage in one-on-one battles that emphasized timing, combos, and special moves.
