Professional Mahjong Gokuh
Inside Professional Mahjong Gokuh
Professional Mahjong Gokuh is a digital interpretation of the classic tile game, released for the MSX 2 home computer system. It arrived during the late 1980s or early 1990s, a period when Japanese developers frequently ported mahjong titles to the platform. The publisher and developer are not widely documented, but the game was clearly aimed at the domestic Japanese market, where mahjong enjoyed huge popularity on PCs.
How to Play Professional Mahjong Gokuh Online
Getting Started
When you launch Professional Mahjong Gokuh, you will likely see a title screen in Japanese. Press Enter or X to advance through any introductory screens. The core loop is a standard game of Mahjong: each player starts with a hand of tiles, and on your turn you draw a tile, then discard one. Your goal is to form a complete winning hand (four melds and a pair) before your opponent does.
The interface shows your hand at the bottom, and the opponent's discards in the center. Use the arrow keys to select tiles, X to confirm a discard, and S to cancel if needed. Pay attention to the winds and dora indicators - they affect scoring. Since menus are in Japanese, familiarize yourself with a few common kanji: ポン (pon), チー (chi), リーチ (riichi), and ロン (ron) to know when special actions are available.
There is only one opponent per match, so focus on learning tile efficiency and defensive play. Losing a hand gives your opponent points, so be careful not to discard dangerous tiles. Winning a hand with a concealed hand (menzen) or a special yaku will score more points. Practice against the CPU to improve your recognition of winning patterns.
