Jumping into The Return of Ishtar on the MSX 2, you’re met with a deliberate pacing that sets a thoughtful mood rather than frantic action. The early moments feel like a careful exploration of a mystical world, with a focus on strategic movement and timing rather than button-mashing. The graphics and sound typical of late 80s MSX 2 titles contribute to an atmospheric experience that invites players to get comfortable with the controls and the game’s unique approach to cooperative play, even though it’s a single-player title. The Return of Ishtar was released in 1989 exclusively in Japan for the MSX 2 platform. It is a sequel to the arcade game The Tower of Druaga and continues the action-adventure style gameplay with puzzle elements. The game was published by Namco, a company well-known for its influential arcade and home computer titles during that era. While detailed development credits are scarce, the game fits within Namco’s portfolio of early action-adventure games that blend exploration with combat and puzzle-solving. Within the action-adventure genre, The Return of Ishtar stands out for its dual-character control mechanic inherited from its arcade predecessor, which was less common on home computers like the MSX 2. Although the game’s graphics and sound may feel dated compared to later titles, it still holds a niche charm for fans of retro Japanese action-adventure games. Its blend of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat offers a challenge that rewards patience and experimentation, making it a rewarding experience for players interested in the roots of the genre.

How to play Return of Ishtar, The online

New players often struggle with the dual-character control system in The Return of Ishtar, which requires managing two characters simultaneously. This mechanic can be confusing on the MSX 2 due to hardware limitations and control schemes that were less intuitive than modern standards. Beginners may try to rush through areas without coordinating their characters properly, leading to frequent mistakes and dead ends. To avoid this, players should take their time to strategize movements and use the environment to their advantage, ensuring both characters are positioned safely before advancing. Another common mistake is underestimating the puzzle elements integrated with combat. Unlike straightforward action games of the era, this title demands attention to item usage and environmental clues. Players should be cautious about engaging enemies blindly and instead focus on exploration and experimenting with different approaches. Learning enemy patterns and conserving resources will greatly improve success chances in navigating the game’s labyrinthine levels.
