Makaijima - Higemaru

Makaijima - Higemaru is an MSX 2 port of Capcom's 1984 arcade platformer Higemaru, released exclusively in Japan. The game brings the arcade experience to home computers with slightly adapted graphics and controls. While the original arcade version came out in 1984, this MSX 2 conversion likely arrived a year or two later, though exact release dates for the port are not widely documented. Capcom is the original publisher, but it's unclear if they handled the MSX development in-house or licensed it to another studio. In Makaijima - Higemaru, you control a character - often described as a ninja or samurai - through side-scrolling levels. The core gameplay involves running and jumping across platforms while avoiding or defeating enemy creatures. You can attack by hitting enemies with a weapon, and certain items grant temporary power-ups. The levels are divided into sections, and the goal is to reach the exit while managing health and lives. The controls are simple: move left or right, jump, and attack. The game is typical of early to mid-80s platformers, with a focus on precise jumping and enemy patterns. This MSX 2 version is worth trying if you are a fan of classic Capcom arcade ports or early platformers. It's a faithful adaptation that captures the feel of the original arcade game, though the graphics and sound are naturally scaled down to fit the MSX 2 hardware. Because it was never released outside Japan, it has a certain rarity appeal for collectors. It's not a groundbreaking title, but it represents a solid piece of gaming history and shows how arcade hits were adapted for home computers in the mid-80s.
