Choplifter

Choplifter originally hit the Apple II in 1982, created by Dan Gorlin and published by Broderbund. It was quickly ported to just about every system that could run it, including the MSX 1. On MSX, you get the same horizontally scrolling shooter action, though the hardware means slightly different colors and sound than the Apple original. This is not a hack or a fan project; it's a straight-up official port from the early 80s. You pilot a helicopter over scrolling terrain, and your main job is to rescue hostages while avoiding enemy tanks, planes, and ships. The helicopter can move in eight directions and fires a forward gun; you also drop a rope for hostages to grab onto. Once you pick up a group, you fly them back to your base for points. The core loop is simple: fly out, dodge fire, grab hostages, return safely. The difficulty ramps up as more enemies appear and your fuel starts running low. As an MSX title, Choplifter stands out because it was one of the few shooters that focused on rescue rather than pure destruction. The graphics are simple but clear, and the gameplay is tight enough that you'll keep trying to save just one more group. It's not a huge epic, but it's a solid arcade-style game that still plays fine today. If you enjoy classic shooters with a non-violent twist, this is worth a few rounds.
