Pac-Man (Japan) (Disk Writer)
Getting to Know Pac-Man (Japan) (Disk Writer)
Pac-Man (Japan) (Disk Writer) is a Famicom Disk System port of Namco's legendary 1980 arcade maze game. Released exclusively in Japan, this version was distributed through Nintendo's Disk Writer kiosks, where players could have the game written onto blank floppy disks. As a core arcade port, it brings the same dot-chomping, ghost-dodging action to Nintendo's disk-based console. The genre is arcade maze action, and the original arcade game was created by Namco's Toru Iwatani.
You control Pac-Man, a yellow circle with a mouth, navigating a maze filled with small dots. The goal is to eat all dots while avoiding four colored ghosts - Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde. Four larger Power Pellets at the corners of the maze temporarily turn the ghosts blue and edible, allowing you to eat them for bonus points. The game has a simple but addictive loop: clear the maze of dots, eat power pellets to turn the tables on ghosts, and avoid contact until then. Scoring includes bonus fruit items that appear periodically.
This FDS version is a faithful recreation of the arcade original, making it a must-try for retro enthusiasts who want to experience Pac-Man on a classic Japanese console. It's historically interesting as one of the earliest arcade ports on the Famicom Disk System, a format that itself is a fascinating piece of gaming history. While it doesn't add new content beyond the arcade standard, its clean presentation and spot-on gameplay hold up well today. For anyone exploring the FDS library, this disk is a straightforward, pure dose of vintage arcade fun.
How to Play Pac-Man (Japan) (Disk Writer) Online
When you boot the game, the menu is in Japanese but it's straightforward. Use Enter to start the game. Pac-Man will appear in the maze. The goal is to eat all the small dots to clear the screen and advance to the next level. Use the Arrow Keys to steer Pac-Man through the corridors. Avoid touching any of the four ghosts - pink, blue, orange, and red - as that will cost you a life. Eat a Power Pellet (the large flashing dots near the corners) to turn the ghosts blue and vulnerable for a short time, then eat them for bonus points.
The game continues until you lose all your lives. The initial lives are three. Each maze cleared speeds up the ghosts slightly, increasing the challenge. The fruit bonus items appear near the center of the maze periodically; eating them adds extra points. There is no save function - classic arcade high-score chasing. Since Pac-Man is purely graphical with minimal text, the Japanese menus won't affect gameplay. Simply press Enter to start and Arrow Keys to move.
