Othello (Japan) (DV 2)
Othello (Japan) (DV 2) Overview
Othello (Japan) (DV 2) is the Famicom Disk System adaptation of the classic two-player board game. Released exclusively in Japan by Nintendo in 1987, it brings the timeless strategy of flipping disks to the 8-bit era. This version is labeled 'DV 2', likely indicating a second disk revision, but the core game remains the same faithful simulation of the original board game. The FDS platform allowed for larger storage and quicker load times compared to cartridge releases, though Othello's simple rules needed little extra space.
Othello is played on an 8x8 grid, where two players take turns placing black or white disks. The goal is to have the majority of your color showing when no legal moves remain. A move must outflank one or more of the opponent's disks in a straight line, flipping them to your color. The game enforces the official rules including passes when no move is available and detection of end conditions. You play against another human, as the FDS version does not include an AI opponent. The interface is clean and minimal, focusing entirely on the board and current player indicators.
Today, Othello on FDS remains a solid choice for quick head-to-head matches. It's a pure, no-frills adaptation that plays exactly like the board game, making it easy to pick up without reading a manual. The main draw is the nostalgia of playing on original hardware or via emulation, and the convenience of having a two-player classic ready to go on a single disk. It doesn't add flashy extras, but for fans of the board game or retro multiplayer, it delivers exactly what it promises.
How to Play Othello (Japan) (DV 2) Online
To start a game, press Start (Enter) at the title screen. The menus are entirely in Japanese, but navigation is straightforward: use the D-Pad to move the cursor and press A (X key) to confirm. You'll see an option for a new game (the top choice) and possibly a mode select. Since this is a two-player game only, select the number of players (it should default to 2-player). The game will then show the Othello board with the standard starting four pieces (two black, two white) in the center. Player 1 controls black and goes first. Use the D-Pad to move the cursor over an empty square and press A to place your disk. A legal move will highlight the opponent's disks that will be flipped; if no legal move exists, the game will automatically pass. The round ends when neither player can move, and the winner is the one with more disks of their color. The FDS version does not have a built-in timer, so take your time. If you need to restart the game, hold the reset button or use the emulator's reset function.
