Saturday Night Slammasters (Europe)
What is Saturday Night Slammasters (Europe)?
Saturday Night Slammasters for the Sega Genesis is the European port of Capcom's 1993 arcade wrestling fighting game. This version brings the over-the-top pro wrestling action to home consoles, featuring a roster of muscle-bound grapplers and the unmistakable character designs of manga artist Tetsuo Hara, creator of Fist of the North Star. The Genesis release retains the arcade's core gameplay while adapting it for a 16-bit audience, offering a unique blend of wrestling and traditional fighting that was rare for its time.
Players pick from a roster of larger-than-life wrestlers, each with their own signature moves and grappling styles. The action takes place in a wrestling ring where you strike, throw, and use special moves to deplete your opponent's stamina before attempting a pinfall or submission. Matches are fast-paced and emphasize positioning and timing over complex combos, with a focus on using the environment - like bouncing off ropes - to gain an advantage. The game supports two-player versus matches as well as single-player mode against AI opponents, giving it solid replay value for local multiplayer sessions.
Today, Saturday Night Slammasters stands as a curious and enjoyable hybrid of fighting and wrestling genres. Hara's distinctive art gives it a gritty, masculine look that set it apart from typical wrestling games of the era. While the Genesis version has some graphical and sound compromises compared to the arcade original, it remains one of the more faithful ports. For fans of Capcom's early 90s output or anyone who appreciates the unique crossover of pro wrestling and fighting game mechanics, this title is worth revisiting on emulation.
How to Play Saturday Night Slammasters (Europe) Online
Start the game and you will see a title screen. Press Start to reach the main menu, where you can choose from options like Arcade Mode, Versus Mode, or Options. Use the D-Pad to highlight your choice and press the A button (X key) to select. In Arcade Mode, pick a wrestler from the roster using the D-Pad and confirm with the A button. You will then fight a series of matches against CPU opponents, aiming to win by pinfall or submission. The controls are straightforward: use the D-Pad to move your wrestler around the ring. The B button (S key) is used for running and attacking, while the Y button (Z key) performs a grapple when close to an opponent. Experiment with directions and button combinations to execute special moves.
Each match begins with both wrestlers in their corners. The core loop involves closing distance, landing strikes or grapples, and wearing down the opponent's stamina bar. When the bar is low, you can attempt a pin by pressing the grapple button near the downed opponent. Be mindful of the referee's count - if you break the pin too late, the match ends. The game also features a unique momentum system where building up a strong combo or landing big moves fills a special meter, allowing for even more devastating attacks. New players should start with the tutorial-like training option if available (not all versions have it), or simply jump into Vs Mode to learn the ropes without pressure.
