Getting Started:

Jump into the fight by selecting your fighter on the character select screen. Each match is a best-of-three round battle against an opponent, with a timer forcing action. The core loop is simple: punch, kick, and use special moves to beat down your enemy, then finish them with a fatality when the announcer says "Finish Him!"

New players should start with the easier characters like Liu Kang or Johnny Cage to learn the basics. Practice the special moves in the options menu's move list; each character has a unique set of attacks that require precise directional inputs. Block by holding back, and remember that the run button (S) can close distance quickly. The game rewards aggression but also demands timing - button mashing won't get you far against the later AI opponents.

For the best experience, play with a friend in two-player versus mode. The Genesis version of Mortal Kombat has some differences from the arcade, like the blood code and the lack of certain moves, but it still captures the intense, visceral feel of the original. If you see a shadowy silhouette in the background, that's a secret fighter - keep an eye out for Reptile.
