King of the Monsters (Europe)

King of the Monsters on the SEGA Genesis is a European release of the monster wrestling game that originally hit arcades in 1991. It landed on the Mega Drive (or Genesis as it was called in North America) in 1992, bringing the oversized kaiju brawling to home consoles. The game is a straightforward port of SNK's arcade hit, letting you take control of giant monsters and wreak havoc in destructible Japanese cityscapes.

You pick one of several monsters and enter a ring that is essentially a city block, complete with buildings, power lines, and other structures that can be destroyed. The goal is to beat your opponent by depleting their health bar before they do the same to you. You can grapple, punch, kick, and use special moves, all while the environment crumbles around you. There are also power-ups that appear, like the special weapon items that give you an edge.

For a Genesis fighting game, King of the Monsters offers something different from the usual one-on-one fighters. It is more of a wrestling sim with giant monsters, and the city destruction adds a sense of scale and chaos. It is not as deep as something like Streets of Rage or Street Fighter II, but if you want a quick game where you can toss a skyscraper at a giant lizard, this is your jam. It holds up best in short bursts or with a friend for two-player mayhem.
