Iron Man X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal is a crossover action game for the Sega Game Gear that brings together Marvel's Iron Man and Valiant Comics' X-O Manowar. Released in the USA and Europe during the mid-1990s, it was part of a wave of intercompany collaborations that tried to capitalize on the popularity of both comic universes. The exact developer and publisher are not widely documented, but the game was produced at a time when the Game Gear was still receiving third-party licensed titles despite the portable market shifting toward Nintendo's Game Boy. Players take control of either Iron Man or X-O Manowar and fight through side-scrolling levels against a variety of enemies. The core gameplay involves running and gunning, using each character's unique projectile attacks and melee moves. You jump over obstacles, shoot at foes, and collect power-ups to replenish health or enhance your weapons. The game follows a typical stage-based structure with a boss battle at the end of each level, though specific story beats are minimal and largely serve as a backdrop for the action. Today, Iron Man X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal is mainly of interest to comic book fans and retro collectors curious about crossover experiments from the 1990s. It is not a standout title in the Game Gear library - controls can feel stiff, and the graphics are serviceable but unremarkable. However, it represents an interesting snapshot of cross-publisher licensing at the time, and playing it online gives a quick taste of handheld action gaming from an era when Sega was still competing in the portable space.

How to play Iron Man X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal online

Getting Started

When you first boot up Iron Man X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal, you are presented with a title screen and a brief menu. Use the D-Pad to navigate and press X to confirm your choice. You can select either Iron Man or X-O Manowar as your character. Each character has slightly different attack patterns - Iron Man fires repulsor blasts while X-O Manowar uses his sword-like energy weapon. Experiment with both to see which suits your play style.

The game is a side-scrolling action platformer. Your goal is to progress through each stage by defeating enemies and avoiding hazards. Press S to attack, X to jump, and combine them for a jump attack. Hold the D-Pad in a direction while pressing S to run. You will encounter power-ups that restore health or temporarily boost your weapon. Watch out for pits and enemy projectiles - touching them reduces your health bar, and losing all health costs you a life. At the end of each level, a boss appears that requires pattern learning and careful dodging.

There is no save system - progress is tracked by passwords or by completing the game in one sitting (common for Game Gear titles). If you get a game over, you will have to restart from the beginning. Focus on memorizing enemy placements and boss patterns to make steady progress. The game is not very long, so persistence pays off.
