Aladdin (USA, Europe)
Inside Aladdin (USA, Europe)
Aladdin on the Sega Game Gear is one of several platformers based on the 1992 Disney animated movie. This version came out around 1993-1994 for the handheld system and was sold in both North America and Europe. You play as the street rat Aladdin, jumping and climbing through stages that pull directly from the film.
You guide Aladdin across rooftops, through the Cave of Wonders, and into the palace. The core action is classic side-scrolling platforming: you run, jump over gaps, and defeat guards by throwing apples or using a sword. Levels are broken up by short cinematics that advance the story. The game follows the movie's plot loosely, but the focus is on the platforming challenges.
This Game Gear port is a solid retelling of the movie for on-the-go play. It may not be as polished as the 16-bit console versions, but it packs a surprising amount of variety into its small screen. If you enjoy retro handheld platformers or Disney games from the early 90s, it is worth a look. Just be ready for the smaller sprite work and the system's dim screen.
How to Play Aladdin (USA, Europe) Online
Getting Started
When you start the game, you see the title screen. Press Enter to get past it. From the main menu, you can choose to start a new game or continue (if you have a password). The first level is Agrabah - you begin on the rooftops. Your character automatically faces whichever direction you move.
Your main goal is to reach the end of each level. Along the way, you need to jump across gaps, climb ropes and ledges, and defeat enemies like palace guards and Thirsty camels. You attack with the B button (which makes Aladdin swing his sword or throw an apple). Jumping on enemies sometimes works, but it is safer to use your weapon.
Each level is quite short, but the difficulty ramps up. You have a health meter shown at the top. Touching enemies or traps reduces it. You can collect hearts to restore health and golden apples to increase your maximum health. At the end of some levels, you face a boss. If you lose all health, you get a game over but can continue from the start of the current level by selecting "Continue" at the password screen. Pay attention to your timing and use the practice mode if you want to learn the level layouts.
