WWF Rage in the Cage
About WWF Rage in the Cage
WWF Rage in the Cage is a professional wrestling game that hit the SEGA CD in December 1993. It was developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment. Think of it as a spin-off made from the same engine as the 16-bit WWF Royal Rumble titles on Super NES and Genesis, so the look and feel are very similar. This was a SEGA CD exclusive, which allowed for CD-quality audio and full-motion video sequences, a step up from cartridge releases.
Matches play out just like the Royal Rumble games. You pick a WWF wrestler from the roster and go head-to-head with an opponent, either the computer or another player. The core loop involves using punches, kicks, grapples, and signature moves to wear down your foe, then attempt a pinfall. The action is viewed from a three-quarter perspective, and each wrestler has a health bar that depletes as they take damage. There are no unique storylines or complex modes - it's straightforward arcade wrestling.
Today, it's worth a look if you're a fan of that early-90s WWF style and the SEGA CD library. The audio benefits from the disc format, with digitized voice clips and a better soundtrack than the cartridge versions. However, it's a simple, no-frills wrestling game that doesn't add much beyond what Royal Rumble offered - so don't expect a deep simulation. It's a neat piece of WWF and SEGA CD history, but not a genre-defining title.
How to Play WWF Rage in the Cage Online
Getting Started
When you first boot up WWF Rage in the Cage, you'll be taken to a title screen. Press Start to reach the main menu where you can choose between a one-player match against the computer or a two-player versus mode. Select your wrestler from the roster using the D-pad and confirm with the A button (X key).
The match begins right after. Your goal is to reduce your opponent's health to zero and then pin them by pressing the run/attack button near their downed body. You can move around the ring, throw punches and kicks, and grapple by pressing B near your opponent. Each wrestler has a unique set of moves, so experiment with different button combinations near the ropes or turnbuckles. The SEGA CD version includes digitized voice clips and a short full-motion video intro, but the gameplay itself is straightforward arcade wrestling.
If you've played WWF Royal Rumble on Genesis or SNES, you'll feel right at home. The core mechanics are identical: light attacks, heavy attacks, and grapples. There's no complex special meter or story mode. Just pick a wrestler, fight, and try to get the three-count.
