World Cup USA '94 brought the 1994 World Cup tournament to SEGA CD in 1994, developed by Tiertex and published by U.S. Gold. This is a straight-up association football game, not a hack or mod, and it landed on the SEGA CD alongside Genesis, SNES, and a bunch of other platforms. The SEGA CD version got a few extras over the cartridge versions, like digitized stadium photos that popped up during matches - pretty neat for the time. If you were into soccer games in the mid-90s, this was one of the officially licensed options for the World Cup.

How to play World Cup USA 94 online

Getting started is simple enough. Fire up the game and you will be at a title screen where you can pick a mode - probably exhibition or tournament. The core loop is standard soccer: you control a team of eleven players, pass the ball around, try to score goals, and prevent the opponent from doing the same. The game follows the real 1994 World Cup groups and schedule, so you can play through the tournament as any of the qualified nations.

World Cup USA 94 FAQ

Is World Cup USA 94 exclusive to SEGA CD or did it appear on other systems?

The game came out on a whole bunch of platforms including Genesis, SNES, Master System, Game Boy, MS-DOS, Commodore Amiga, and Game Gear. The SEGA CD version is one of several ports, all sharing the same core tournament structure but with different audio and visual extras per system.

Does World Cup USA 94 have a multiplayer or co-op mode?

Yes, you can play head-to-head against a friend using a second controller. It is a standard two-player versus mode where each person picks a team and plays a regular match. There is no co-op mode since it is a traditional sports title.

What makes World Cup USA 94 stand out among SEGA CD titles of its era?

The SEGA CD version includes digitized photos of the actual stadiums used in the 1994 World Cup, which appear during matches. That was a small but nice touch that the cartridge versions lacked. The game also has the official license with the real groups and fixture schedule, making it one of the more authentic soccer games for the system.
