Syndicate
What is Syndicate?
Syndicate on SEGA CD is a direct port of Bullfrog's classic 1993 real-time tactical strategy game, bringing its cyberpunk dystopia to Sega's CD-ROM console. Released in 1994 by Electronic Arts, this version is essentially the same as the PC original, with the addition of digitized speech and a fitting electronic soundtrack. It's a top-down squad-based game, not an action shooter, demanding careful planning and quick decision-making as you direct a team of augmented agents through missions in a grim corporate future.
You take control of up to four agents, each equipped with an array of weapons and cybernetic implants. Missions typically involve infiltrating enemy strongholds, assassinating targets, or stealing research data, all viewed from an isometric perspective. The core loop has you pausing the action to issue movement and attack orders, then watching them unfold in real time. A unique tool is the Persuadertron, which lets you brainwash civilians and enemy agents to join your cause, adding a layer of tactical depth. Between missions, you research new technologies and upgrade your agents' abilities and equipment at a cyberclinic.
What makes this version worth playing today is its faithful translation of a PC strategy masterpiece to a console that rarely saw such complex games. The SEGA CD's extra storage allowed for full voice narration and a moody soundtrack that enhances the oppressive atmosphere. While the controls take some getting used to without a mouse, the core experience remains intact. It's a niche title compared to the platform's action-heavy library, but for fans of cerebral, slow-burn tactics with a heavy cyberpunk flavor, Syndicate on SEGA CD is a hidden gem that holds up remarkably well.

Getting Started
When you start Syndicate, you are presented with a mission briefing screen that outlines your objectives and the map layout. Use the D-pad to navigate menus and the B button (S key) to cancel or back out. Your first mission is a simple training exercise: take your squad of agents to a target building and eliminate the marked enemy. The core gameplay loop involves selecting an agent (often by pressing A or using a shoulder button to cycle through them), then moving them with the D-pad while holding a button (try holding B and moving to direct movement with the cursor).
To succeed, you need to manage your agents' health, ammunition, and persuade civilians to join you using the Persuadertron (typically mapped to the Y or X button). Pausing the game frequently to issue orders is key - the action moves fast once unpaused. Pay attention to the minimap in the corner of the screen to spot enemies and objectives. Between missions, you return to a research and upgrade screen where you can improve your agents' weapons, armor, and cybernetic abilities. The game is unforgiving; if all agents die, you must restart the mission.
