Star Wars Chess on the SEGA CD is exactly what it sounds like: a full chess game dressed up in Star Wars themes. Released in the early 1990s, it came out during the SEGA CD's initial push for multimedia and licensed titles. This isn't a hack or mod - it's a proper retail game that puts you on a holographic chessboard with characters from the original trilogy.
At its core, you play standard chess against an AI opponent. Getting Started
Boot up the game and you'll see a title screen with the Star Wars theme. Press Start to enter the main menu. From there you can choose to start a new game, load a password, or adjust options. The game defaults to you playing as the Rebel side (light side) against the Imperial AI. Select your difficulty level - there are a few settings that affect the AI's skill. Once the game begins, the board appears with 3D rendered pieces on a holographic grid. Use the d-pad to highlight a piece, press the A button to select it, then move the cursor to the target square and press A again to move. If the move is a capture, you'll see an animated sequence play out. The core loop is just playing chess until checkmate or resignation.
There are no tutorials or branching paths - you simply play chess. If you want to play against a friend, the game supports two-player hotseat mode. You can save your progress using passwords, which the game displays when you quit or at certain checkpoints. Write the password down and enter it later to resume. The menus are in English, so navigation is straightforward. If you're new to chess, try the easiest AI setting first.
