Sonic the Hedgehog CD (Jun 21, 1993 prototype) is an early build of the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog CD game for the SEGA CD platform. This prototype dates back to 1993 and was intended for release in both Japan and the USA. The game was published by Sega and developed internally, but this particular version is a prototype, meaning it is an unfinished or pre-release build that differs from the final commercial release. As such, it provides valuable insight into the development process and design decisions made during the creation of Sonic CD. The SEGA CD was an add-on for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive that allowed for enhanced audio and full-motion video capabilities. Sonic the Hedgehog CD was among the most notable titles released for this platform, showcasing the system's potential for richer visuals and sound compared to cartridge-based games. The prototype version reflects early ideas and features that may have been altered or removed before the final release. This situates the game as an interesting artifact within the SEGA CD library, especially considering the platform's experimentation with multimedia and cinematic presentation in the early 1990s. Preservation of this prototype is important for historical and archival purposes. It offers enthusiasts and researchers a chance to compare the evolution of Sonic CD's gameplay, levels, and audio design. Prototype versions like this help document the creative process behind one of the SEGA CD's flagship titles and contribute to a fuller understanding of early 1990s platform game development. Despite lacking some polish or completion, the prototype deserves a place in retro gaming catalogs as a window into game history and development methodology.

The pacing is fast, emphasizing momentum and precise timing as you navigate through colorful levels filled with loops, springs, and enemies. The tension often comes from balancing speed with careful platforming, avoiding hazards while trying to maintain Sonic's momentum. The game also includes unique time travel mechanics that add depth and variety to the gameplay, encouraging exploration and replay to unlock different stage versions. The hook lies in its blend of classic Sonic speed-based platforming with the enhanced audio-visual capabilities of the SEGA CD. Players experience vibrant backgrounds, animated sequences, and a memorable soundtrack that were notable for the era.
