Radical Rex
Radical Rex Overview
Radical Rex is a 1994 platform game that landed on the SEGA CD as a port of the same title released for SNES and Sega Genesis. Developed by Beam Software, it is a remake of the 1993 Game Boy game Baby T-Rex. The SEGA CD version came out when the add-on was still trying to build a library of engaging titles, and it brought a colorful, prehistoric platforming experience to the system.
You control a young dinosaur named Rex as he runs and jumps through side-scrolling levels. The core gameplay involves moving left and right, leaping over gaps and obstacles, and attacking enemies - usually by spitting fireballs. Each level is a straightforward run from start to finish, with collectible items and occasional power-ups to aid your progress. The game sticks to classic platforming conventions without any complex mechanics, so you can jump right in.
As a SEGA CD title, Radical Rex is competent but not groundbreaking. Its visuals are bright and cartoony, typical of mid-90s mascot platformers, and the soundtrack benefits from the CD's audio capabilities. It's a decent choice if you are exploring the SEGA CD library and want a simple, kid-friendly action game. Just don't expect anything revolutionary - it's a solid but modest entry in the platformer genre.
How to Play Radical Rex Online
Getting started is as simple as pressing Start to begin a new game. You take control of Rex on the first level. Use the Arrow Keys to move left and right, and press X to jump over pits or onto platforms. The S button fires a fireball attack to defeat enemies - hold it while pressing a direction to run faster. Each level has a clear endpoint, usually marked by a sign or door; reaching it advances you to the next stage. There are no complex menus or tutorials, so you can start playing immediately.
The core loop is straightforward: run through the level, avoid or eliminate hazards, and collect shiny items for points. Watch out for spikes, bottomless pits, and enemies that can knock you back. You have a health bar, and collecting hearts restores it. If you lose all health, you restart from the beginning of the level. The game is short but can be challenging if you rush. Take your time to learn enemy patterns and jump timing.
If you are playing the SEGA CD version on emulator, note that the controls match the console layout. There is no in-game saving, so be prepared to play through in one sitting or use save states. The game's design is simple and welcoming, so even if you have never played it before, you will understand what to do within a minute.
