Fatal Fury Special
What is Fatal Fury Special?
Fatal Fury Special on SEGA CD is a fighting game originally released by SNK in 1993 for the Neo Geo, then ported to Sega's CD-based console. This version brought the arcade hit to home systems with the same fast-paced combat and expanded character roster. Developed and published by SNK, it refines the formula introduced in Fatal Fury 2 while adding new wrinkles that would influence later entries.
You select one of fifteen fighters, each with unique normal moves and special attacks, then face off against opponents in best-of-three rounds. The game introduced a simple combo system, allowing you to chain attacks for more damage, and brought back three characters from the original Fatal Fury alongside four CPU-only bosses now made playable. A secret encounter with Ryo Sakazaki from the Art of Fighting series awaits those who finish single-player without continues. The SEGA CD port retains the smooth animation and responsive controls of the Neo Geo version, though loading times between matches are a trade-off of the era.
For retro fighting fans, this is a solid pick that captures the transition between early 90s one-on-one brawlers and the more technical fighters that followed. Its inclusion of a larger roster and combo mechanics makes it more engaging than its immediate predecessor, and the SEGA CD port is a decent way to experience it if you do not have access to the original hardware. It may not reinvent the wheel, but it delivers polished arcade action that holds up well in short bursts.
How to Play Fatal Fury Special Online
Getting Started
When you first boot up Fatal Fury Special, you will see a title screen. Press Start to get to the menu. Select “Game” for single-player, or “VS” for two-player. In single-player, you choose your character and then fight through a series of opponents, each with two rounds to win. The core loop is picking your fighter, learning their special moves (quarter-circle forward plus punch or kick, etc.), and reading opponent patterns to land combos.
New players should start with Terry Bogard or Mai Shiranui, as their movesets are straightforward. Your basic attacks are the A (X) and B (S) buttons; holding a direction while pressing attack changes the move. Landing three light punches or kicks in a row creates a simple combo. Watch the health bar—letting it fall to zero loses the round. After each victory, you advance until you reach the boss, then the secret boss if you have not used continues. The SEGA CD version loads between fights, so be patient.
If you want to practice, choose the “Options” menu to adjust difficulty (level 4 is default) and set button layouts. There is no training mode, so your best bet is to play single-player repeatedly to master specials and combos. The language is English in localized versions, so menus are easy to navigate without guides.
