The game opens in the war-torn future of 2029, where you control Kyle Reese. Movement and shooting are your core tools - hold down the attack button to fire rapidly while jumping across ruined platforms. Defeating enemies and pressing onward to the right is the main loop, but health is limited, so learning enemy patterns prevents a quick death. Suppressing Skynet's machines requires patience and careful aim, especially when screen-clearing power-ups appear.

After the future prologue, the perspective shifts to the Terminator itself in present-day Los Angeles. Here you must hunt down Sarah Connor, represented as a moving target on a city map, while police and obstacles try to stop you. Collisions with civilians reduce your energy, so restraint is rewarded. Each environment - from tech-noir alleys to a tense factory showdown - tests your ability to manage limited continues and learn the level layout.
