Volguard
Getting to Know Volguard
Volguard is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up released for the MSX 1 computer platform in the mid-1980s. It was published by a Japanese software house during the heyday of home computer gaming, likely targeting the domestic market. The title is a straightforward shooter, typical of the era's arcade-inspired designs that MSX users craved.
In Volguard, you pilot a small fighter ship through a series of horizontally scrolling stages, blasting waves of enemy aircraft and ground targets. The core loop involves dodging bullet patterns and collecting power-ups that enhance your ship's weaponry. Each level ends with a boss fight that requires pattern recognition to defeat. The game uses the MSX 1's modest hardware to deliver fast-paced action with simple sprite work.
For fans of classic shooters, Volguard represents a solid example of the genre on the MSX platform. While it doesn't break new ground, its tight controls and challenging difficulty make it worth a few credits for anyone curious about 8-bit shoot 'em ups. It's a niche title even among MSX enthusiasts, but that adds to its charm for collectors and preservationists.
How to Play Volguard Online
Getting Started
When you launch Volguard, the title screen appears. Press Enter to start; on the Japanese version the menu text is in Japanese, but the start option is typically the first one. Immediately you control your ship. Use the Arrow Keys to move, and S to fire your main weapon. The goal is to survive through each stage by destroying enemies and avoiding their projectiles.
Collect floating items: some upgrade your gun, others grant a temporary shield or spread shot. Pay attention to enemy patterns, especially bosses, which require memorized timing. The game gets harder quickly, so focus on dodging first and shooting second.
Since this is an MSX 1 title, there is no save system - you play from beginning to end in one session. If you die, you restart at a checkpoint. The lack of continues means practice is essential. Use the emulator's save state feature if you need a break.
