Pitfall 1
Pitfall 1 on MSX1
Pitfall 1 for the MSX 1 is a side-scrolling platformer that brought the jungle adventures of Pitfall Harry to yet another home computer system in the early 1980s. Originally developed and published by Activision for the Atari 2600, this MSX port faithfully recreates the same frantic treasure hunt. Like many computer ports of the era, it retains the core formula while adapting controls for the MSX keyboard, making it a neat piece of early cross-platform gaming history.
You control Pitfall Harry as he runs endlessly to the right across a jungle landscape filled with deadly hazards. Pits, scorpions, crocodiles, and rolling logs all stand between you and the riches hidden in underground tunnels. Pressing the jump button lets you clear obstacles, while swinging on vines helps you cross larger gaps. The game keeps track of a time limit and your total treasure score, pushing you to move quickly and efficiently without making fatal missteps.
This MSX version of Pitfall 1 is a solid port that captures the addictive run-and-jump challenge of the original. While it lacks the graphical polish of later platformers, its straightforward design and tight controls still offer a satisfying test of reflexes. For fans of early 8-bit action games, it is a worthwhile glimpse into the origins of the platforming genre and a reminder of how much could be achieved with very simple mechanics.
How to Play Pitfall 1 Online
Getting started
When the game boots you will see a title screen. Press Enter (Start) to begin. The game immediately drops you into the jungle. Your first goal is simply to move right using the Arrow Keys while pressing X to jump over obstacles. The core loop is straightforward: run, jump, grab treasures, and avoid everything that hurts you.
Keep an eye on the timer at the top of the screen. There is a twenty-minute countdown, and when it reaches zero the game ends. Your score depends on how many gold bars, diamonds, and other valuables you collected along the way. You can press S (B button) to make Harry run faster, which helps cover more ground but makes precise jumps trickier.
Underground tunnels appear as darker patches on the ground. Drop into them to find extra treasures and a ladder to climb back up. Watch out for scorpions in those tunnels. The game scrolls only to the right, so you cannot go back to previous screens. Every death resets you to a nearby checkpoint, but you lose precious time. Focus on staying alive and grabbing as many riches as you can before the clock runs out.
