Hydlide 1 on MSX 1 is an early action role-playing game originally developed by T&E Soft. It first appeared on Japanese home computers in 1984, with the MSX port arriving soon after. This is an official commercial release, not a hack or homebrew. The game is often remembered as one of the earliest examples of the action RPG genre, predating the Legend of Zelda by a few years. You control a knight exploring a top-down fantasy overworld. Combat happens in real time: you have to run into enemies to harm them, which feels clunky by modern standards but was a novel mechanic at the time. You collect gold and items, gain experience points to level up, and venture into dungeons to find keys and defeat bosses. The game also features simple puzzles and a basic magic system. Today, Hydlide is worth checking out as a historical curiosity. It shows the early attempts at blending action and RPG elements on limited hardware. The MSX version runs smoothly and captures the same feel as the original. It is far from polished, but for fans of retro gaming and game history, it offers a genuine look at the genre's infancy.

How to play Hydlide 1 online

When you start Hydlide, you are placed in a small village area. Use the Arrow Keys to move your knight around. Press S to run, which also lets you dash into enemies to attack. You can jump with X to avoid obstacles or reach different elevations. The first goal is to explore the overworld, find enemies to fight, and collect gold and items that appear after victories. The core loop involves fighting enemies to gain experience and level up, making you stronger. You can enter houses and dungeons by walking into doors, but some require keys found elsewhere. Managing your health is important; you regain HP by collecting hearts or using items. The game has a simple password system for saving progress on the MSX version, so write down the password that appears after certain milestones. Menus are entirely in Japanese, which can be a barrier if you do not read the language. However, the interface is minimal: pressing Start brings up a status screen showing your level, gold, and equipment. Experimentation is key, but the core gameplay loop is straightforward enough to enjoy even without understanding every text prompt.
