Front Line

Front Line on MSX1

What makes Front Line worth a look today is its historical importance - it helped define the run and gun template that games like Commando and Ikari Warriors would later refine. The MSX 1 port captures that frantic, no-nonsense arcade feel, even if the graphics and sound are understandably simpler. It's not a deep game, but for a quick blast of retro action, it holds up better than most of its peers.

How to Play Front Line Online

Getting Started

When the game starts, you control a soldier on a green battlefield. Move with the Arrow Keys to walk around, and press S to fire your gun in the direction you're facing. To throw grenades, press X. You start with limited grenades, so use them wisely against groups or armored vehicles.

The first thing you'll see is a straight road with enemy soldiers and jeeps coming at you. Take cover behind obstacles when you can, because enemy bullets are deadly. If a tank appears, run up to it and press X to climb inside - now you've got extra armor and a more powerful weapon. You can get out by pressing X again.

The goal is to reach the end of each stage without losing all your lives. Enemies keep coming, so keep moving and shooting. The game never pauses, so you need to react quickly. If you die, you restart at the beginning of that stage, making each life precious.
