Youkai Yashiki (Japan)
About Youkai Yashiki (Japan)
Youkai Yashiki is a horror-themed side-scrolling action game released for the Famicom Disk System in 1987. Developed and published by Taito, it was exclusive to Japan and uses the disk format's ability to save progress. The game is often remembered as an early attempt at blending exploration with monster encounters in a platforming environment, predating many similar titles.
You control a young boy exploring a large, haunted mansion filled with Japanese ghosts and monsters (youkai). The objective is to navigate through multiple interconnected rooms, avoid or defeat enemies, and find key items to progress deeper into the mansion. Along the way you will also find hidden doors and puzzles that require careful observation and item usage. The game uses a side-view perspective, and your character can jump and attack using a simple weapon.
While Youkai Yashiki is not a household name, it holds a niche appeal for retro enthusiasts interested in FDS exclusives and early horror games. Its atmosphere, with creepy music and detailed sprite work, stands out among other disk system titles. If you enjoy exploring moody, maze-like levels with light puzzle elements and can tolerate the language barrier (menus are in Japanese), this is a worthwhile curiosity from Taito's early history.
How to Play Youkai Yashiki (Japan) Online
To get started, power on the game and watch the brief intro sequence. You will start outside the mansion. Use the D-Pad to move left and right, and press the S button to attack with your weapon. The X button makes your character jump. Your immediate goal is to enter the mansion and begin exploring its many rooms. The game uses a password system to save progress; you will need to note down a code after each level to continue later.
As you explore, you will encounter various youkai that can harm you. Some can be defeated by attacking, while others are best avoided. Keep an eye out for items such as keys and food - keys open locked doors and food restores your health. The game's manual is in Japanese, but the core gameplay is simple enough to pick up by trial. The key is patience: methodically search every screen and try using items in different places to uncover secrets. Remember to use the Select button to view your inventory if you get stuck.
