About Monty on the Run - Monty no Doki Doki Dai Dassou

Monty on the Run - Monty no Doki Doki Dai Dassou is the Famicom Disk System version of the classic Commodore 64 platformer, released exclusively in Japan. It was adapted for Nintendo's disk-based system, which allowed for larger save files and quicker loading than cartridge-based Famicom games. The original game was developed by Gremlin Graphics, but the FDS port's developer and publisher are not widely documented, so this release remains a curious piece of retro history for fans of the series. In this game, you control Monty, a small thief trying to escape from prison and outrun the authorities. The gameplay is a straightforward side-scrolling platformer where you run and jump across various stages, avoiding guards, obstacles, and pitfalls. Monty can run at different speeds and must collect keys or other items to progress, while watching out for spikes and moving platforms. The core loop is typical of the genre: navigate from the start of each level to the exit without losing all your lives. For Famicom enthusiasts, this is an interesting oddity because it brings a British microcomputer hit to a Japanese console. The disk system allowed for better audio and larger games, but the limited release means copies are hard to find. It offers a unique challenge for collectors and those curious about cross-platform adaptations from the 8-bit era. If you enjoy retro platformers with simple but tight controls, this is worth a look despite its niche status.
