Halley Wars (Japan)
Halley Wars (Japan) Overview
Halley Wars is a vertical scrolling shooter that debuted on the Famicom Disk System in 1986, exclusively in Japan. Developed and published by HAL Laboratory, the game puts you in control of a starfighter tasked with repelling an alien invasion. It belongs to the classic shoot-'em-up genre, drawing clear inspiration from arcade hits like Xevious but tailored for the FDS hardware with its own visual style and level design.
The player pilots a small ship across scrolling landscapes, firing at both airborne enemies and ground-based targets. Bombs can be used to clear the screen of threats, and occasional power-up capsules appear to enhance your weaponry. The core loop involves weaving through enemy fire, destroying wave after wave of alien craft, and progressing through increasingly difficult stages. There is no story mode or dialogue - just pure action from start to finish.
As a FDS exclusive, Halley Wars is a solid example of early console shooters. It isn't groundbreaking, but it offers tight controls, challenging difficulty, and that unmistakable 8-bit charm. For retro shooter fans, especially those interested in HAL Laboratory's pre-Kirby catalog, it's worth checking out. The lack of a save feature and straightforward design keep it firmly rooted in the arcade-style tradition of the era.
How to Play Halley Wars (Japan) Online
Getting Started
When you start Halley Wars, the title screen will appear in Japanese. Press Start (Enter) to begin the game. There are no menus to navigate - just jump straight into the action. Your ship appears at the bottom of the screen, and enemies will immediately start approaching from above.
The core gameplay is simple: use the Arrow Keys to move your ship around, and press the B button (S key) to fire your main weapon. Press the A button (X key) to drop a bomb, which clears the screen of most enemies and bullets. Power-up items float down periodically; fly into them to upgrade your weapons, which makes surviving later waves easier.
Halley Wars is a traditional score-chasing shooter. There are no continues or checkpoints, so each life is precious. Focus on dodging enemy fire and destroying ground targets for extra points. The game loops after you defeat the final boss, but the difficulty ramps up. Since all menus are in Japanese, remember that pressing Select (V) toggles the sound options on the title screen, and you can start the game directly with Start.
