Famimaga Disk Vol. 5 - Puyo Puyo (Japan) (Disk Writer) on FDS
Famimaga Disk Vol. 5 - Puyo Puyo is a puzzle game released exclusively for the Famicom Disk System in Japan. It was distributed through the Disk Writer service, where players could take a blank disk to a kiosk and have the game written onto it. This particular volume was published by Tokuma Shoten as part of their Famimaga Disk series, which collected popular titles from the magazine's coverage. The game itself is the classic falling-block puzzle game originally created by Compile, known for its colorful cast and addictive chain-combo mechanics.
How to Play Famimaga Disk Vol. 5 - Puyo Puyo (Japan) (Disk Writer) Online
Getting Started
When you start the game, you'll see the title screen and a brief menu in Japanese. Press Start to begin single-player mode, or use Select to adjust options. The goal is straightforward: line up three or more Puyo (colored blob creatures) of the same color to clear them from the playfield. Two Puyo drop at a time and you can rotate them as they fall.
Playing continues until the pile reaches the top. The core loop involves arranging small groups to set off chains - when cleared Puyo cause others to fall into matching groups, triggering chain reactions. Chains are the key to scoring big and sending garbage Puyo to your opponent in versus mode.
Since the menus are entirely in Japanese, you may need to experiment to navigate. The game follows the same rules as the original Puyo Puyo, so if you're familiar with that, you'll feel right at home. Use the D-Pad to position pieces and the A button (X key) to rotate clockwise.
