Dr. Chaos - Jigoku no Tobira - Action Classic

Dr. Chaos - Jigoku no Tobira is a side-scrolling action game released for the Famicom Disk System in 1987. Published by Pony Canyon and developed by Marionette, it is the Japanese original of the game later known simply as Dr. Chaos in North America. The subtitle translates to 'Gates of Hell' and sets a horror tone from the start. This FDS version features a death screen with a skull and uses the disk system's unique save functionality, though it was also ported to cartridge for Western audiences. You play as Dr. Chaos himself, exploring a sprawling mansion infested with monsters and traps. The core loop involves moving left or right through interconnected rooms, shooting enemies with a limited supply of ammunition, and collecting keys to unlock doors that block progress. Health and weapons can be replenished by finding items scattered around the mansion. The game demands careful resource management and pattern recognition, as enemies respawn and ammo is scarce. While the structure is linear overall, you can revisit earlier areas, and some paths require backtracking with the right key. Dr. Chaos is worth trying today if you appreciate early horror-themed action games on the FDS. Its pixel art and moody soundtrack create a creepy atmosphere that stands out among other disk system titles. The challenge is genuine, with limited continues and a password system for saving progress. It shares some DNA with games like Castlevania but leans more on exploration and resource management. If you are a fan of obscure FDS releases or want to see where the later NES port came from, this is a solid pick. Just be ready for its old-school difficulty and Japanese text in menus.

How to play Dr. Chaos - Jigoku no Tobira online

Getting started: When you boot the game, you will see a title screen with Japanese text. Press start to begin. Your character, Dr. Chaos, starts in a dimly lit mansion. Use the D-Pad to move left and right and make him climb stairs or ladders. The X button fires your default weapon, which consumes ammo displayed at the top of the screen. At first, explore the rooms to find keys (often hanging on walls or in chests) that unlock doors blocking your path. You will also find hearts to restore health and weapon upgrades that change your attack. The core loop is straightforward: move through rooms, shoot the skeletons, bats, and other creatures that appear, collect items, and use keys to progress deeper into the mansion. If you run out of ammo, you can only punch enemies up close, which is risky. Keep an eye on your health and look for save points. The game uses a password system to continue your progress, which is shown when you select the continue option at the title screen. Since the menus are in Japanese, press V (Select) to toggle between new game and continue, then confirm with X. The passwords are short strings of letters and numbers, so copy them down carefully.
