White Men Can't Jump (World)
White Men Can't Jump (World) - Sports Classic
White Men Can't Jump is a basketball video game released for the Atari Jaguar in 1995. Developed by High Voltage Software and published by Atari, it takes loose inspiration from the 1992 comedy film of the same name. Instead of a simulation, this game focuses on streetball - a fast, loose variant of basketball played on outdoor courts without many formal rules.
Players pick a team and compete in three-on-three street basketball matches. The core objective is to outscore the opponent by making baskets from anywhere on the court. There are no fouls or set plays; the action is free-flowing and arcade-like. You can challenge the computer in single-player, or grab up to three friends using the Jaguar's Team Tap multitap for four-player local matches.
For retro sports fans, White Men Can't Jump offers a unique take on basketball that captures the vibe of street pickup games. It gives a different feel compared to the more simulation-heavy basketball titles of the 16-bit era. The Jaguar library is small, and this game fills a sports niche that isn't otherwise present on the system. It's a straightforward but enjoyable diversion, especially with a group of friends.
How to Play White Men Can't Jump (World) Online
After booting up, you will see a title screen. Press Start to proceed to the main menu. From there, you can choose between single-player and multiplayer modes. If you have a Team Tap and extra controllers, up to four players can join. Select your team - there are several fictional crews to pick from, each with different attributes like speed and shooting accuracy.
Once a match begins, the game plays like a typical streetball game. You control one player at a time with the D-pad for movement. Use the A button to jump for rebounds or to shoot, and the B button to run faster or to attempt steals. The ball is passed automatically in some situations, but you can manually pass by pressing a button while facing a teammate. The match ends when one team reaches the target score, usually 11 or 15 points depending on the settings.
Winning relies on quick decision-making and exploiting openings. Since there are no fouls, physical play is common. Keep an eye on the shot clock - you must attempt a shot before time expires. Practice shooting from different spots to learn the timing. Multiplayer is where the game shines, as the chaotic action creates fun moments.
