Getting Started

When you start Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, you take control of Pitfall Harry Jr. who must rescue his father from the spirit Zakelua. The game is a side-scrolling platformer where you run, jump, and swing through jungle stages. Each stage is laid out like a long corridor, filled with pits, enemies, and collectible items. You move left or right using the D-pad, and use the A button to jump over hazards. The B button lets you attack enemies using a whip or run faster. Watch for vines you can grab and swing across, but time your jumps carefully because one mistake often means restarting from the last checkpoint.

The core loop involves exploring each stage from start to finish, gathering treasures like gold nuggets and rings, and avoiding or defeating creatures like snakes and crocodiles. Some stages have multiple routes, so experimenting with different paths can reveal hidden areas or shortcuts. The game uses a lives system and continues, so don't be afraid to lose a few rounds while you learn enemy patterns. The six-button layout is well-suited to the Jaguar controller, but if you're emulating, the keyboard mapping given above replicates that setup.
