Bubble Bobble (US with mode select)
Bubble Bobble (US with mode select): arcade Platformer
Bubble Bobble first appeared in arcades in 1986, developed and published by Taito. This US version includes a mode select feature, letting players choose between different starting points or difficulty settings. It's a single-screen platformer where one or two players control Bub or Bob, two adorable dragons on a quest to rescue their girlfriends from the Cave of Monsters. The cooperative two-player mode is a big part of its enduring appeal.
Each level is a self-contained room filled with enemies. The goal is to trap every monster by blowing bubbles at them, then pop the bubbles before they escape. Enemies that fall to the ground turn into food items that score points. There are 100 levels in total, each introducing new enemy types and patterns that make the game progressively tougher. Power-ups appear when you pop certain bubbles, giving you extra speed, firepower, or temporary invincibility.
What makes Bubble Bobble worth revisiting today is its tight design and pure, addictive fun. The music is catchy, the controls are responsive, and the cooperative play is as enjoyable as ever. While it's simple by modern standards, its charm and challenge hold up remarkably well. For anyone who grew up in the arcade era, this is a classic that defined the platforming genre.
How to Play Bubble Bobble (US with mode select) Online
Getting Started
When you start the game, press Enter to begin. If you see a mode select screen, use the arrow keys and press X to choose your starting level or options. The core loop is simple: enter a level, blow bubbles to trap all enemies, then pop the bubbles to defeat them. Once every enemy is gone, a door appears to take you to the next level.
You can jump with the A button (X) and blow bubbles with the B button (S). The bubbles you shoot can also be used as platforms to reach higher areas. Be careful not to touch enemies directly while they are not trapped, or you will lose a life. Grab power-ups like shoes (speed) or water (rapid fire) to help you clear levels faster. Cooperative play is highly recommended because two players can revive each other and cover more ground.
