Bubble Bobble (older)
Bubble Bobble (older) Overview
Bubble Bobble is a classic 1986 arcade platformer from Taito, released that year in Japan and later in North America through Romstar and in Europe via Electrocoin. You play as one of two dragons, Bub or Bob, on a quest to rescue their girlfriends from the Cave of Monsters. The game became a staple in arcades thanks to its charming characters and addictive gameplay.
Each of the 100 levels is a single-screen arena filled with enemies. Your dragon can blow bubbles to trap foes, then pop the bubbles to defeat them and turn them into score-boosting items. The twist is that you must clear all enemies to progress, and popping bubbles at the right moment can chain reactions for bonus points. It's simple in concept but demands careful timing and positioning as the levels get tougher.
Bubble Bobble endures because it nails the pick-up-and-play arcade spirit while offering surprising depth. The co-op mode is especially fun, letting two players work together to clear rooms. If you enjoy classic arcade platformers that prioritize tight mechanics over story, this is a must-try. It's also influenced countless games with its bubble-trapping mechanic, making it a piece of gaming history.
How to Play Bubble Bobble (older) Online
Insert coin or press start to begin. Select one or two players - two-player co-op is the intended way to play. You control Bub or Bob and can move with the D-Pad and jump with the A button.
Blow bubbles by pressing the attack button. Trapped enemies can be popped by touching the bubble or by jumping on them. Clear all enemies to advance to the next level. Use the bubble pop to release items for bonus points.
New players should focus on learning enemy patterns and bubble timing. Some enemies can break bubbles, so be quick. Also note that certain bubbles will float upward - pop them high to create chain reactions. The game saves progress on later versions but on arcade you start from level 1 each time.
