ASO - Armored Scrum Object
Getting to Know ASO - Armored Scrum Object
ASO - Armored Scrum Object is a classic arcade vertical scrolling shooter that hit arcades back in 1985. Developed and published by SNK (the same company behind Ikari Warriors and Metal Slug), it originally appeared in Japanese arcade cabinets before making its way overseas. This is the original coin-op release, not a hack or homebrew, so what you get here is the real deal from the golden age of shoot 'em ups.
You pilot a heavily armored tank through a series of enemy-infested stages. The view scrolls upward automatically, and your job is to destroy everything that moves - tanks, turrets, aircraft, and bunkers. You can shoot straight ahead or pivot your turret to fire at angles using the second button. Along the way you can pick up power-ups that improve your weapons or add auxiliary units that follow and fire alongside you. The game gets tough fast, so memorizing enemy patterns and collecting the right upgrades is key.
If you enjoy old-school arcade shooters like 1942 or Commando but want a tank instead of a plane or soldier, ASO is worth a look. It's not as famous as SNK's later hits, but it has a solid difficulty curve and that addictive quarter-munching rhythm. The graphics are simple but charming, with detailed sprite work for the vehicle wrecks and explosions. It's a niche title, but fans of vertical shooters will find plenty to like.
How to Play ASO - Armored Scrum Object Online
Getting Started
Insert a coin (press Enter with the game running or use Select to add credits) and then press Start. You control a tank that moves in eight directions with the arrow keys. Hold down S to fire your main cannon continuously; you can aim the turret separately by pressing Up or Down while firing, which lets you angle shots. The main goal is to survive each stage by destroying enemy tanks, gun emplacements, and aircraft while avoiding their return fire.
The core loop is straightforward: move, shoot, and grab power-ups that drop from destroyed enemies. Power-ups include weapon upgrades, extra speed, and helper units that attach to your tank and add firepower. Stages are short but intense, and after clearing a certain number you face a boss. If you lose all your lives it's game over, but you can continue by adding more credits. The arcade original has no save state, so this emulated version includes a save feature if you need it.
Menus are in English, so no language barrier. There's no tutorial - just jump in and learn by dying. Try to stay near the bottom of the screen to maximize reaction time, and always be ready to weave between bullet patterns. It's a simple pick-up-and-play shooter that rewards quick reflexes.
