Zillion (USA) (v1.1) is a side-scrolling action-adventure game released for the SEGA Master System in 1987. It was part of the early wave of titles on the platform that sought to blend exploration and combat elements. This version, labeled v1.1, reflects the USA release aimed at Western audiences following the original launch in Japan. Compared to other SEGA Master System games of its time, Zillion combines platforming with puzzle-solving and stealth elements, a somewhat distinctive approach amid the more straightforward arcade-style or pure platform titles common on the system. Its gameplay involves navigating a complex base, collecting key items, and avoiding or confronting enemies, which was a step beyond many contemporaries that focused solely on jump-and-run mechanics. Players who enjoy methodical exploration mixed with action will find Zillion rewarding today. Its blend of searching for codes and managing resources appeals to those who like a challenge beyond typical platformers. Retro gamers interested in the evolution of action-adventure games on 8-bit consoles will appreciate its role in the Master System’s library and its unique design for the era.
