Stormlord (USA)
Stormlord (USA): Genesis Platformer
Stormlord is a platform game that originally hit home computers in 1989, developed by Hewson Consultants. The SEGA Genesis version came along in 1990, ported by Punk Development and published by Razorsoft, making it one of those early third-party titles for the system. If you played the Amiga or C64 versions, you'll recognize the same core idea, but the Genesis port tweaks visuals and controls for the console.
You guide the titular Stormlord through side-scrolling levels, jumping over pits and avoiding or fighting enemies. The goal is to rescue fairies scattered around each stage, which adds a light exploration element. Stormlord can shoot projectiles and use a limited number of special attacks. The game leans on precision jumping and timing, typical of late eighties platformers.
Today Stormlord is a niche curiosity, definitely worth a look if you enjoy early Genesis titles or want to see how a computer game translated to console. It's simple and short, but the challenge is real. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it captures that era's design philosophy well. If you're into retro platforming with a fantasy feel, give it a shot.
How to Play Stormlord (USA) Online
Getting Started
When you start Stormlord, you'll see a title screen and then a level. Use the d-pad to move left and right, and press X to jump. Press S to shoot your weapon. The core loop is simple: run through each stage, collect magic items, and free the fairies trapped in cages or held by enemies. Each rescued fairy adds to your score and sometimes gives you extra power.
Watch out for gaps and spikes. Some platforms are tricky to land on. You have a limited number of lives, but you can earn more by reaching certain score thresholds. The game doesn't give you a map; you just explore each screen one at a time. If you get stuck, experiment with shooting every block or ledge you see.
New players should take their time. Rushing leads to falling into pits or getting hit by enemies you didn't see. The first level is a good place to learn the jump arc and attack range. There's no save feature, so you'll need to finish in one sitting or use the game's built-in password system if it has one (some versions do). If this is the Genesis port, it likely has a password feature after certain levels, but I'm not 100% sure.
