Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (World) (Beta) (Simon Wai) [Hack by Esrael v0.23] (~Sonic 2 Delta)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (World) (Beta) (Simon Wai) [Hack by Esrael v0.23] (~Sonic 2 Delta) on Genesis
This is a ROM hack of the Simon Wai beta version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the SEGA Genesis, titled ~Sonic 2 Delta. It was created by a hacker known as Esrael and is currently at version 0.23. The original beta was never officially released and was discovered and dumped years after the commercial game came out, so this hack builds on that unreleased prototype code rather than the final retail Sonic 2.
As a platformer, you control Sonic (and sometimes Tails) through side-scrolling levels, running, jumping, and spin-attacking enemies and obstacles. The core gameplay loop is identical to the final Sonic 2: collect rings, reach the goal post, and defeat Dr. Robotnik at the end of each zone. Since this is a hack of the beta, the level layouts, enemy placement, and even some special stage behavior may differ from the retail version, offering a slightly different experience.
For fans of the blue blur or retro game archaeology, this hack is a curious piece of Sonic history. It lets you play an alternate take on a classic, one based on an unfinished build that only a handful of people saw before it was preserved. It is not a polished or complete overhaul, but rather a mod that tweaks and explores the Simon Wai beta content. If you have already played the official Sonic 2 to death, this is a nice change of pace that shows what could have been.
How to Play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (World) (Beta) (Simon Wai) [Hack by Esrael v0.23] (~Sonic 2 Delta) Online
Getting Started
The game boots directly into the title screen. Press Start to begin. You control Sonic through Green Hill Zone (or the beta equivalent) with the goal of reaching the end of each act. Run right, avoid or defeat badniks, collect rings, and jump on Robotnik's Egg Mobile at the zone's end. Rings protect you from damage; losing all rings costs a life.
Because this is a hack of a beta build, some level layouts, special stage entrance points, or even debug mode keys might behave differently than the retail Sonic 2. You may want to experiment with the controls to see if any extra functions are enabled. The game plays like a standard Genesis platformer, so if you know Sonic, you will feel right at home.
If you get stuck, remember that you can spin dash by holding down and pressing jump while standing still. Tails follows you if you are in single-player, but you can also play co-op (though this hack might have altered the co-op code). Just focus on moving forward and collecting rings until you have a feel for the modified level design.
