Sonic 2 with Knuckles
Sonic 2 with Knuckles: Genesis Platformer
This is a ROM hack for the SEGA Genesis game Sonic the Hedgehog 2, known as Sonic 2 with Knuckles. It was created by the hacking community to let players take control of Knuckles the Echidna through the levels originally designed for Sonic and Tails. Being a fan-made modification, it was not an official release and doesn't have a set release date or publisher; it emerged in the years following the original 1992 game as part of the modding scene. The genre is a 2D platformer, keeping the fast-paced side-scrolling action the Genesis is famous for.
The core gameplay is identical to Sonic 2, but you control Knuckles instead of Sonic or Tails. This means you still race through zones like Emerald Hill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone, collecting rings, defeating badniks, and reaching the goal. However, Knuckles brings his own abilities: he can glide by pressing the jump button in the air, cling to walls and climb them, and punch enemies or break items with a crouching attack. These changes open up new routes and require you to approach some sections differently than you would with Sonic's spin dash and speed.
For anyone who grew up on the original Sonic 2 and wanted to play as the red echidna properly, this hack is a treat. It doesn't overhaul the game, but it offers a fresh way to experience familiar levels. The modding community has kept these Genesis classics alive, and this hack is one of the more straightforward and enjoyable examples. If you like the original but want a character swap that feels meaningful rather than just cosmetic, this is worth a run.
How to Play Sonic 2 with Knuckles Online
Getting Started
When you load Sonic 2 with Knuckles, you will see the familiar title screen but with Knuckles replacing Sonic. Press Start to begin. You will start at the first level, Emerald Hill Zone Act 1. The objective is the same as any Sonic platformer: run from left to right, avoid or defeat enemies, collect gold rings for protection and score, and reach the giant sign at the end of each act. You control Knuckles, so remember that you can hold the jump button while in the air to glide, and if you press against a wall, you can climb up it. This changes the flow of some sections where Sonic would have to rely on speed or spin dashes.
The core loop is straightforward: traverse each zone, beat the act's boss at the end of Act 2 (or Act 3 in some zones), and progress to the next area. Knuckles cannot do a spin dash like Sonic, but his glide and climbing offer alternative ways to reach higher platforms or skip certain obstacles. The game does not have a save feature, so you will need to finish it in one sitting or use the game's level select code (if available) to continue later. Menus are in English, so navigation is no issue. Just pick your level and go.
