Shining Force II (Europe)
Inside Shining Force II (Europe)
Shining Force II is a tactical RPG released for the SEGA Genesis in Europe in 1994. Developed by Sonic! Software Planning and published by Sega, it's the sequel to the original Shining Force. The story begins when an unwitting thief sets the demon lord Zeon free, and you take on the role of Bowie, a young hero from the Kingdom of Granseal. Your mission is to assemble and lead the Shining Force to victory.
In this game, you guide Bowie across an overworld map, visiting towns, recruiting new characters, and uncovering the plot. Battles are turn-based and take place on isometric grid maps where you position your units, attack enemies, cast spells, and use items. Each character has unique classes and can later promote to stronger forms. The core loop involves exploring, talking to NPCs, engaging in tactical skirmishes, and managing your party's growth and equipment.
What makes Shining Force II worth trying today is its well-crafted mix of strategy and storytelling. The game offers a long campaign with a memorable cast and a soundtrack that many fans still praise. It stands among the top tactical RPGs on the Genesis, alongside entries like the original Shining Force and Fire Emblem. If you enjoy turn-based strategy with a fantasy setting and a touch of exploration, this title holds up remarkably well.
How to Play Shining Force II (Europe) Online
Getting Started
When you first load Shining Force II for Europe, select "New Game" from the title screen. You will see an introductory scene setting up the story of Zeon's release. After that, you take control of Bowie in the town of Granseal. Walk around and talk to townspeople to learn about the situation. Your first objective is to head to the castle and speak with the king to receive your initial mission.
The core gameplay loop alternates between free exploration in towns and on the world map, and tactical battles. In towns, you can visit shops to buy weapons, armor, and items, and talk to NPCs for hints. When you enter a battle, the game switches to a grid-based battlefield. You move each of your units in turn, positioning them to attack enemies effectively. Pay attention to terrain, as it affects movement and defense. After winning a battle, you earn experience and gold, and your characters may level up.
New players should know that saving is done at churches in towns. Also, each character can eventually promote to an advanced class when they reach level 20 (or later with a special item). Use the Egress spell to leave battles you are losing, or to return to the last town. The game expects you to explore and talk to everyone - vital story clues and recruitment opportunities are easy to miss if you rush.
