Metal Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Inside Metal Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Metal Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a fan-made ROM hack for the SEGA Genesis, built by modifying the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It came out sometime after the original 1992 release, though the exact date isn't widely documented. This hack swaps out Sonic for Metal Sonic, the robotic doppelgänger first seen in Sonic CD, giving the game a different visual flavor while keeping the same level layouts and core structure.
You play through the same zones as in the original Sonic 2 - Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, and so on - but now as Metal Sonic. The controls are identical: you run fast, jump on enemies, collect rings, and spin dash to smash through obstacles. The main change is cosmetic, with Metal Sonic's sprites replacing Sonic's, plus some palette and graphics edits to match his red, blue, and silver look. The goal remains the same: reach the end of each act, defeat Doctor Robotnik at the zone's end, and gather the Chaos Emeralds in the special stages.
For anyone who loves Metal Sonic's design or just wants a fresh coat of paint on a beloved platformer, this hack delivers exactly that. It doesn't add new levels or change the physics, so it's a simple but effective reskin. If you've played Sonic 2 to death, swapping in the rival robot adds a little novelty without messing with the tight level design that made the original a classic. It's a niche treat for mod enthusiasts and Sega fans alike.
How to Play Metal Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Online
Getting Started
Fire up the hack and you'll see the familiar Sonic 2 title screen, though the sprites have been swapped for Metal Sonic. Press Enter to start. You begin in Emerald Hill Zone, Act 1. The objective is to run from left to right, collect rings, avoid or defeat badniks (Robotnik's robots), and reach the giant ring at the end of each act to trigger a boss fight.
The core loop is the same as any classic Sonic game: maintain speed, use the spin dash (hold down and press the jump button, then release) to break through walls or hit enemies, and grab shields or invincibility from monitors. Metal Sonic handles identically to Sonic, so no new moves to learn. The special stages appear after passing a checkpoint with at least 50 rings, accessed by jumping into a giant ring. Collect all seven Chaos Emeralds to unlock the true ending.
Since this is a sprite and palette hack only, everything else - level design, enemy placement, boss patterns - remains unchanged from Sonic 2. If you know how to beat the original, you already know how to beat this. Just enjoy the visual twist and the novelty of controlling Metal Sonic through zones he never officially appeared in.
