Curse (Japan)
Inside Curse (Japan)
Curse is a sideways scrolling shoot 'em up released for the Sega Mega Drive in 1989. It was developed by Micronet and never left Japan. If you are after a solid arcade-style shooter from the early Genesis library, this is one of those obscure imports worth knowing about.
You control a small ship moving left to right across scrolling stages, blasting enemies and avoiding their fire. Power-ups appear to upgrade your weaponry. The game follows the classic shmup formula - waves of enemies keep coming until you face a boss at the end of each stage. Nothing revolutionary, but it is competently made.
Curse does not reinvent the wheel, but it captures the feel of late-80s arcade shooters well. For collectors of Japanese Mega Drive games, it is a neat example of Micronet's output. If you enjoy titles like Hellfire or Truxton, this will feel familiar. Just be prepared for menus entirely in Japanese - though the gameplay is straightforward enough to pick up without reading them.
How to Play Curse (Japan) Online
When you boot up Curse, you will see a title screen with Japanese text. Press Start to proceed. The options menu allows you to adjust difficulty and lives, but it is all in Japanese - the default settings are fine for a first try.
Once in the game, your ship appears on the left. Use the D-Pad to move and S (B button) to shoot. Power-up icons float by; collect them to change your weapon. The goal is simply to survive each stage and defeat the end boss.
Because it is a Japan-only release, you may need to navigate menus by trial and error. The gameplay is intuitive enough that language is not a barrier. Just dive in and enjoy the scrolling action.
