Castlevania - The New Generation (Europe) (Beta)
Castlevania - The New Generation (Europe) (Beta): Genesis Platformer
This is a beta build of Castlevania: Bloodlines, known in Europe as Castlevania: The New Generation, for the Sega Genesis. Released in 1994, it was developed and published by Konami as the first Castlevania title on a Nintendo-free platform. The beta version offers a glimpse into the development process, with some differences from the final retail release. Naturally, it's a side-scrolling action platformer where you wield the Vampire Killer whip.
The player takes on the role of either John Morris or Eric Lecarde, hunting down vampires across early 20th-century Europe. The core gameplay involves jumping between platforms, whipping enemies, and collecting sub-weapons like axes and holy water. Each stage is linear with a boss fight at the end, and the beta may have altered enemy placement or item drops compared to the final version. The classic Castlevania mechanics of precise jumps and careful combat are front and center.
For fans of the series, this beta build is a fascinating artifact showing how the game evolved. It feels like the polished retail version but with small quirks that make it worth exploring. Compared to other Genesis action platformers, Castlevania: Bloodlines stands out for its gothic atmosphere and tighter whip mechanics. If you enjoy retro game history or are a Castlevania completionist, this beta is a neat piece to check out.
How to Play Castlevania - The New Generation (Europe) (Beta) Online
The game boots to a title screen. Press Start to proceed. On the character select screen, choose either John Morris (balanced) or Eric Lecarde (faster with a longer reach). Your goal is to complete each stage by defeating enemies, avoiding hazards, and conquering a boss at the end. The stage order is fixed: first Germany, then Italy, and so on.
Core loop: explore left to right, whip candles for hearts and sub-weapons, use sub-weapons strategically against tough enemies and bosses. Health is restored by finding roast chicken hidden in walls or dropped by enemies. Save points are absent as this is a beta; you have limited continues. Master the whip's upward and diagonal attacks by jumping and pressing attack. Timing jumps is critical over pits and spike traps. If you get stuck, remember that each boss has a pattern to learn.
Important: This beta build may have altered enemy placements, different item drops, or slight graphical differences from the final game. It is still fully playable from start to finish. The menus are in English, so navigation is straightforward.
