Getting Started
Before you start, remember that this is a Japanese-only game. All menu text is in Japanese, so you may want to have a translation guide handy or look up the menu layouts online. Upon booting, you'll see a title screen; press Enter to begin. The first thing you'll do is either start a new game or load a saved state. Use Arrow Keys to navigate the menu, X to confirm, and S to cancel.
The game begins with a brief story scene, then you're thrown into your first battle. During battles, use the D-Pad to move a cursor over your units. Press X to select a unit, then move to a valid tile (highlighted blue) and press X again to move. After moving, you can choose to attack (if an enemy is adjacent) or use an item or spell from a sub-menu. The turn order is simple: all player units go first, then all enemy units counter. Between battles, you'll visit towns and the world map. In towns, walk up to NPCs to talk or enter shops to buy items and equipment. The core loop is battle, rest, recruit, repeat.
If you get stuck on a menu, remember that the leftmost option in the main menu is usually "New Game" (the first choice). The second is often "Continue" or "Load." In battle, the first option when selecting a unit is usually "Move" and the second is "Item/Special" (like magic). Experiment cautiously and save often using the emulator's save state feature, since in-game saving requires navigating Japanese text. Once you get the hang of the grid-based movement and turn-based combat, the rest falls into place like any early 90s tactical RPG.
